The previous BAX plugin was released in 2013. This version was rebuilt from the ground up using current development and capture technology. It went through four major revisions, comparisons with two production hardware units, Audio Precision measurements, and repeated listening by Chris Muth, marek and the golden eared clan. It’s the only BAX EQ Plugin certified by Dangerous Music.

The plugin was developed together with Dangerous Music Digital® and Acustica Audio, in collaboration with Luca Pretolesi of Studio DMI. Acustica brought its DSP and software-development expertise. Dangerous Music supplied the hardware references, measurements, converters, listening feedback, and final product approval. Luca contributed his perspective as a longtime BAX user and mix engineer.

The plugin was developed against production BAX EQ hardware and carries the same broad, musical approach: phase-coherent cut filters, smooth shelves, and fast tonal shaping. Hardware and software each have their own signal path and workflow. The plugin also adds Mid-Side processing, Dual Mono operation, and a final output control.

Each revision brought the plugin closer to the reference hardware. Early versions differed in filter slopes, midrange character, gravitas, and open air. Listening notes and measurements helped the development team identify what needed to change. By version four, the response and overall feel were where the Dangerous team wanted them. (Technically it was seven, but we didn’t want to bore you.)

By version three, both hardware references checked out, but the plugin’s curves still weren’t lining up as closely as expected. Dangerous Music sent its own CONVERT-AD+ and CONVERT-2 mastering-grade converters for the impulse-response capture. Using the same conversion chain the team trusted for critical listening helped bring back the space, weight, and ease they associated with the hardware.

Classic keeps the familiar, streamlined BAX workflow. Expanded brings the plugin’s additional controls into view. Dual Mono gives you independent left and right operation. You can move between them based on how quickly or deeply you want to work.

Mid-Side mode lets you shape the center and sides separately. You might punch up the low end just in the center, add air or width to the sides, or adjust the vocal without applying the same move across the entire mix.

Use it on individual tracks, stems, the mix buss, or a mastering chain. It’s especially useful when you want broad tonal moves—more weight, warmth, air, clarity, or dimensionality—without spending time hunting for a narrow frequency.

The BAX EQ Plugin is available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats for major DAWs on macOS and Windows. Check the current minimum and recommended system requirements before installing.
